New Team Member with Community Land Trust Experience

Hello Charles,

I would be glad to accept the invitation from the Community Economic Development Resource Center, Inc. to serve on the core planning team to explore the acquisition of Soda Springs Ranch.  The Community Land Trust model offers long term protection for the property and would help facilitate the use of the property by a coalition of groups working for the benefit of the larger community in the Sedona area.

My personal work with Community Land Trusts began in 1978 with the formation of the Monadnock Community Land Trust in south central New Hampshire.  Along with basic organizational development, I served as the project manager for the development of the Hearthstone Community, an intentional community in Wilton, NH; and helped to coordinate feasibility studies for several other projects.  While in New England, I also helped the Valley Community Land Trust (Franklin County, MA) acquire tax-exempt status, grant funding and property; helped the Cheshire Housing Trust (Keene, NH) acquire grant funding; and worked with the Brattleboro Area Community Land Trust (Brattleboro, VT) on issues of planning and development.

Now in Phoenix Arizona, I have initiated the formation of the Arizona Community Land Trust (AzCLT).  This group is well along its way in organizational development.  Committees have been formed to develop projects providing transitional housing for the homeless; and to work on assessing and developing ways to improve the community food system.  The work on the community food system initiative has brought AzCLT into close working relationships with the City of Phoenix, St Lukes Health Initiatives, U of A County Extension Office, Maricopa County Dept of Public Health, ASU School of Sustainability, and many independent stakeholders in the food system.

Along with my Community Land Trust experience, I have over 30 years experience of working with other nonprofit groups (mostly educational and environmental) on issues of development, planning, project management, event coordination, marketing and more.  I look forward to bringing this experience to serve the development of your project.

Thank you for an opportunity to be involved.

Peace,

 Richard Starling
